The Day I went to London with St. John Ambulance....
It was 18th June 2005, on very sunny & very warm Saturday afternoon. The occasion was the annual service of commemoration & re-dedication for St. John Day. It was held at St. Paul's Cathedral in the city centre of London. Our county (Northamptonshire) was given the honour of organizing the some of the event.
We took over a Thousand people with us, more than any other county. I went with my friend Rupal from our division. There's was only about 8 of us from the division, but I knew others there. We got off the coach at Smithfield Market and spent a couple of hours chilling out, getting ready and having lunch. This was also the first time I had been to St. John's Gate, but more on that later.
Just before 2pm we lined up in rows of three. after a few minutes of getting ready we marched down to Ludgate, then up towards St. Paul's. I can't tell you how nervous I was or how proud I felt. I also can't tell you how good it felt knowing that I was able to stop traffic in the city centre of London on a Saturday afternoon! That was the crowning glory of my day!
My parents & Nan came with me (although they couldn't parade with me) & were, so I'm told "glowing" with pride! The service started at quarter past 2pm. The service was a good hour long at least, & believe me when I tell you that was long enough! Don't get me wrong I have nothing against Church services etc, but it was the middle of summer, it was a very warm & very sunny day, and I was in full number 1 uniform! & believe me when I tell you I was so damn hot! It's lucky we had water!
It was an amazing day, which everyone enjoyed. I got a lot from it as I was having a "low" moment around this time & it all came at the right time! When we had finished & others had gone back to the coaches, myself & the family went back to Nan's, who lives in South London. we then went out for dinner before myself & folks went back home.
